CLEAN EARTH: Location, Location, Location

Buildings produce carbon emissions during construction, refurbishment, and eventual demolition, from embodied energy in building materials and furnishings to the operational demand of lighting, ventilation, air conditioning, and other systems.

Bet even before workers walk through the door, they contribute emissions through travel--estimated at an average of 2.2 tons or carbon dioxide from each worker every year. Plan your building to encourage public and alternative transportation. The Lake View Terrace Library in Los Angeles, certified platinum by the U.S. Green Building Council, provides safe access for bicyclists and pedestrians, a bicycle storage area, easy access to public transportation--even a place to charge electric vehicles.
